Estepona is on the Costa del Sol, 85km from Malaga and 45km from Gibraltar. Both international airports are very extremely convenient to use either driving or by foot. Here is a brief guide to using the airports. Further details on request.

Airport Transfers

Should you prefer not to drive we can arrange collection and return journey to either Malaga or Gibraltar airports direct to the Townhouse at reasonable rates. We have a reliable and helpful contact who can 'meet and greet' you. As a resident they are aware of local traffic issues and commuting times.

Gibraltar Airport

Gibraltar Airport is an experience - the main road out of Gib, as it is known, runs over the runway. The traffic is stopped like a level crossing when there is a takeoff or landing. In terms of getting to Estepona, the airport offers advantages as it is much closer and smaller, but these can be outweighed by the annoyance of leaving Gibraltar and entering Spain.

Airport

The airport is extremely small. It is compact and very easy to walk around, with a bar and some small shops. You will see British Bobbies! An added advantage is that it is a duty free zone, and you can buy on arrival. The airport is about 10 minutes walk from the main street in Gibraltar. Both arriving and departing from Gibraltar Airport is extremely fast and friendly.

There are a string of car hire firms in the airport and it is very easy to pick up a vehicle, with the car park being a short walk over the road from arrivals.

Leaving Gibraltar

Gibraltar is only 40 minutes drive from Estepona. It is much closer than Malaga but the Spain/Gibraltar border prevents it being a faster way to get Estepona. Expect to queue in your hire car for 15-20 minutes waiting to get through passport control and customs. When you finally get across turn right and follow the signs for Malaga through the suburbs of Linea de la Conception - Gib's rather unlovely sister across the border. After 15 minutes or so, with spectacular views of the rock behind you, you will join the Autopista that becomes the toll motorway that will take you all the way to Estepona.

Coming back

On your return to Gibraltar the Spanish road signs are not very explicit - do not expect to find it easy to use signage to the border. Plan your journey with a map and be prepared to get lost in Linea since the border isn't exactly promoted by the Spanish. Fortunately there are is a very good signpost in the rock towering over Linea. If you have a morning flight lots of people live in Linea and work in Gibraltar and there is a rush hour queue so remember to leave plenty of time. Don't worry if you check in early, a short walk and you can be in the centre of Gibraltar shopping or sightseeing. There is a very nice roof bar/café in which you can see your outbound plane arrive.

Malaga Airport

Malaga Airport (AGP) is located 6 km to the west of Malaga city and 85 km (55 minutes by car) from Estepona. The journey by car to Estepona is mainly by Autopista/motorway and is very straightforward. When leaving the airport keep to the right-hand lane and take the N340A towards Torremolinos & Cadiz. After approximately 2 km (keeping in the right-hand lane of the road, otherwise it’s easy to miss the turn-off) filter right onto the E15/N340 Motorway signposted Benalmadena / Algeciras. Continue on this road all the way to Estepona. The journey time is usually about 50 minutes. A new road is currently being built out of Malaga airport which should make it even quicker soon.

Car Hire

There are many Rent-a-Car companies in and around Malaga Airport. Several Car-hire companies are based in the Malaga airport basement carpark. A pre-booked car can be picked up and on the road in about 20/30 minutes. The car hire offices are downstairs from the Arrivals Hall in Malaga airport. Send someone to start queuing whilst you pick up your luggage from the carrousel!

Private hire

Taxis are plentiful at Malaga Airport. All prices are displayed and fixed. The cost to Estepona is about (rough guide) 110-130€ depending on day and time of journey. Feedback from clients is that private hire taxis have been known to take the 'scenic route', and not the most direct route, to the Townhouse. We would recommend pre-booking. A general tip is to ask the price before you start your journey.

Public Transport to Estepona and returning to Malaga Airport

Buses and coaches are plentiful in Andalucia and they are generally fairly modern, clean and air-conditioned. The usual method of purchasing a ticket is to buy it from the bus company ticket sales window at the depot. When boarding a bus between towns you pay the driver. There are two options available:
